PFAS: The Science

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been the subject of lawsuits and public concern in recent years. Despite this increased attention, the question of how PFAS impact the human body is still not common knowledge for many people.

PFAS have existed since the 1930s and are present in soil, water, and animals, including humans. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) states that “scientists are unable to estimate an environmental half-life for PFAS, which is the amount of time it takes 50% of the chemical to disappear.”

According to the NIEHS, there are over 4,700 distinct types of PFAS with “an increasing number as industry invents new forms of this type of chemical.”

Both the NIEHS and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are researching the effects of PFAS on the human body as levels of the synthetic compounds build up over time.

According to the NIEHS, PFAS can contribute to altered metabolic rates and increasing weight gain. Additionally, elevated PFAS levels in children are correlated with higher rates of obesity and damage to neurological behaviors. High PFAS levels have also been associated with fetal weight issues, impacted fertility, and reduced immune function.

If you or a loved one have suffered negative health effects associated with PFAS in an area with PFAS contamination, you may be able to join ongoing litigation efforts and recover medical costs or other damages. In order to join these lawsuits, you will need a mass torts attorney.

An experienced mass torts attorney can file your case in the appropriate district and advocate for your case. In addition to managing your lawsuit, your mass torts attorney can also evaluate settlement offers and advise you about whether it suits your specific case.

The best place to find an experienced mass torts attorney is Attorney at Law.
